Kenzington Kottenbrock, Biomedical Engineering

Kennzington Kottenbrock was one of the UR&CI’s 2019 URAP Awardees. She is a sophomore studying Biomedical Engineering, and worked over the summer with Dr. David Dean in the Department of Plastic Surgery studying “Average Pelvic Template”.

“By being a URAP fellow, I was able to get hands on experience in research. It was awesome to be able to see how research progresses from a grant proposal to presentation preparation. The application alone gave me the opportunity to properly outline my experimental plan and schedule for the project. Through this program, I learned that I definitely wanted to pursue a career in research. I enjoyed the idea of doing something that hasn’t been done before to try and better the way the field of medicine works.”

Advice to undergraduate students interested in pursuing research?

Be persistent. You may not get accepted into the first lab you apply for but eventually you will find one that you will truly enjoy working with. There are many ways to try to get into a lab, whether that be finding an open position online or talking with a professor. Feel free to put yourself out there in order to get the most out of your undergraduate experience.

Here I am selecting (segmenting) the pelvic bone from the rest of the body seen in the scan (left window). The selected region will be added to a volume to create a 3D image of the pelvis (right window).


Here is the final product of the segmentation process shown earlier.


This is a color map of the curvature of the pelvis. Red areas are areas of high curvature and blue areas indicate low curvature. The curvature will then be averaged across many pelvic samples to create an average pelvis.
